A tired dog is a good dog
The universe is a funny place. I've been resisting certain things -- a new dog in my life, just to name one -- for a while now, but just the last couple of days I said to the universe, quietly 'yeah sure, a dog, that would be great. It's time.' And then I said it out loud the other day, and now there's this dog snoring on the chair next to me.
She's pretty worn out, poor sweetheart. She's been all over town looking for a home and we finally caught up with each other and now here she is. When I met her this morning, the woman who introduced us said that she had a year-old neutered male boxer mix for me to meet. I said 'OK, sure' and I met the dog and called him Rufus, because that's what I call all orange dogs. I thought he seemed younger than she said, but never got a good look at him because he was so wiggly and happy to lick my face.
He was so cute I just said, 'yeah, bring him by my house later.' And she would have, but in the meantime she took him to the vet and left me a message to say he was a girl and much younger than she'd thought, and I didn't answer quickly enough to suit her, so she took her to someone else who wanted a female puppy. But then I called when I left my office and learned that this woman's other dogs hated the new puppy, and it was a temporary gig at best.
And I've been saying 'no puppies, no puppies' for years now, but I'm afraid I was already too far gone. I ended up borrowing Julie's car to go get her at that other place, and then we went for a walk and hung out in the back yard for a while. Now we're inside, getting ready to sleep. Well, she's sleeping. I'm thinking about it.
Her name is Ruby.

Yeah, funny how that happens, innit?
Congratulations!
I say yes, yes, yes to Ruby!
What about some more pictures?
Ha! Megan I just sent you an email -- hadn't checked these comments yet. I've been home sick today.
Easy for you to say, old chum. She just chewed through the [extension] cord of the TV set, and then picked up my cellphone very gently in her teeth and put it into her water dish. Just now she was sleeping soundly but woke up with a concerned look on her face about the helicopter overhead. Gotta love having a major trauma center in the neighborhood, eh?
I'll take some pictures tomorrow, maybe. Today I've been too busy -- what with shots of Nyquil every four hours, naps, and picking up the recycling that keeps getting re-distributed and picking up the junk mail that gets chewed up, I hardly have time to try to find the camera. It's somewhere under all the stuff I put on the table so the puppy can't get it. I'm pretty sure that's where it is, anyway.
They only chew for that first year. You can buy all new stuff next year. Thanks, puppy!
I'd forgotten that my previous dog used to baptize particularly cherished toys in her water dish. You must feel so honored that she chose your cell phone.
RUBY!!! So wonderful! Mazeltov!
She's going to be a big girl, from the looks of those paws. I hope you have many, many happy years together.
Thanks, Sara -- I do think she'll be a big gal. She was sitting next to Tigger the other day and her paws are almost as big as his. He's about twice her size!
I did ask the universe for a big dog, so I'm not unhappy about this, not in the least.
I'll post more pics soon -- I've been sick for days and haven't even bothered to take any. Starting to feel more normal, though.
