Dog dream
I dreamed last night that I was running with the alphabitch herself. That's her at left, sitting in what was then the only comfortable chair in the house. We used to fight over it sometimes. I wish I had a picture of her running, so you could see how perfectly beautiful her tail was. I can remember it, but sometimes I'm afraid I'll forget.
In the dream, we were just running together, down by the creek in the park, and she wasn't on her leash. I'd always wanted to do that with her, let her run off the leash, but she was a little bit unreliable and liked to start fights with other dogs. And eat garbage. But in the dream, we just kept running. Sometimes she followed me, and sometimes I ran to catch up to her, and sometimes we ran beside each other.
It was a very happy dream, and she's been on my mind all day. Maybe I'm having dog dreams on account of looking at pictures of TwistyFaster's dangerously cute new puppy. I can't help going back to look.

I love Jonatha Brooke's "Dog Dreams"...
Me and Rex took the car,
Ha, ha, stay home . . . stay.
We're gonna run over
All the neighborhood cats,
'Cause they tease us from
The other side of the fence.
We're gonna go in the swamp
And you can't hose us off.
Dog dreams, dog dreams,
Please don't wake us up!
Chorus:
No bad dog, no stay,
No basement, no way,
No choke chain, no dry food,
No fetch game, no, no, no . . .
no sit, lie down, roll over, shame...shame on you.
Me and Rex took the car
ha, ha, stay home. Stay.
We're gonna go through everyone's garbage
And have the dinners we deserve.
We're gonna find some great smelling bitches
and see if they meant what they said from the end of the leash.
Dog dreams, dog dreams, please don't hose us off.
And...not my tickle spot.
I totally love that song!
Great poem.
My mother and I have often talked about how cool it would be if we could go along with our cats as they galavant at night. (Thought we might end up horrified, come to think of it.) I think there is now a camera you can attach to a dog's collar to see what they are doing when they are out and about.
Perhaps it is better just to imagine it. . . .
Oops, song, I guess I mean--I haven't heard it (I read it here first!). I will have to check it out.
Slightly later. . .Ok, one last comment and I'll quit. Jane Siberry is great and vaguely reminds me of Jonatha Brooks (now that I have actually heard her). "Everything Reminds Me of my Dog" is ok, and dog-themed, though I really like "Hockey," off the same album, Bound by the Beauty.
That's a great record by Jane Siberry. I made a CD for someone a while ago with all the dog-themed songs I could find; I was missing 'Everything Reminds Me of My Dog' but I had 'Dog Dreams' and 'Even a Dog Can Shake Hands' (Warren Zevon) and Nick Drake's 'Black-Eyed Dog' and a couple of old-time fiddle tunes ('Granny Does Your Dog Bite' and 'Greasy Coat') from Old Crow Medicine Show and Matthew Sweet's 'Cats vs. Dogs' and 'Dogsong' and 'Dogsong II' from the Be Good Tanyas. And a few others I can't recall just now.
But the thing I listen to most (now that I finally found a copy -- it's out of print) when I am having lack-of-pet-related angst is 'Karen Mantler's Pet Project.' It's hilarious. It's a whole concept album about the death of her cat Arnold and her subsequent search for a new pet. Her mom, Karla Bley, is in the highly excellent band:
"Arnold
More than a cat
He's not just any cat
Big furry pillow with claws
Arnold I love you so much
All I do is think of you
They ask me what's wrong
It's just that Arnold is so nice
I can't bear to lose him
Arnold
I loved him
Arnold
My only friend
Now he's dead
(I know it's hard, I feel the same way)
How could you know what he meant to me
I loved him so much
He was my cat
(Arnold)
The only cat
I ever truly loved
I can't believe he's gone
(Arnold)
He might be dead
But I still play his song
He was my cat
(Arnold)
How could he die
And leave me all alone
Arnold
I miss him
Arnold
Now that he's gone
I'm alone
(You're not alone/ you still have us here)
It's not the same
How can I go on
Without him
I'm lost
He was my cat
Arnold
One look at you
It was love at first sight
So soft and fat
What a cat
Arnold who could resist you
Touching you was paradise
They think we're crazy
But if you know him
You'd agree there's no cat as great as
Arnold"
